Take that constructionists!

dumb_and_dumberTom Schaller of FiveThirtyEight. com pretty much just pulled off the email response equivalent to beating the shit out of an elderly person. In the best way possible. If that makes any sense.

John Lofton, editor at TheAmericanView.com (that website’s probably incredible. I should definitely check it out when I feel like I’m having too good of a day) emailed him stating that the constitution doesn’t say anything about health care or how it should be handled so the government has no place interfering with it wahhh. Come on.

Shortly after Tom Schaller gave the guy the people’s elbow and his response was perfect and I fully agree. Yes, the constitution was written by great, brilliant men, and no one is arguing that, but what people are failing to understand is the true meaning behind the constitution. It is not a rulebook by which you must run the country, it is essentially a framework for the continuation of a country based off certain principles. There’s LOTS OF SHIT the constitution doesn’t say that we have since determined to be necessary to better ourselves as a country and as human beings in general. So we did that necessary SHIT because the constitution allows us to. Maybe some people need a refresher course on 4th grade American History but there’s this whole thing in it about setting up a legislative system, etc…or whatever that’s all about…

My favorite part, regarding the fallacy that anything “not specifically proscribed by the Constitution is constitutionally permissible.” :

…the Constitution doesn’t mention sex with minors, incest, or gay marriage, and so, by the omission-is-permission logic an adult man could consummate his marriage to his 14-year-old nephew. I mean, the Founders didn’t say anything about not doing that, so it must be OK constitutionally, right?

You dog, you.

Read the whole thing here.

(p.s. I love Dumb and Dumber and feel terrible about associating them with a man like John Lofton)
