HOW DOES AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL WORK

Here’s a neat video of air traffic getting back to its normal and absurd level of activity after THE ASH HAD CLEARED over most of Europe and the UK.  I hope these planes are set to “Super fuel guzzle, emission spray” mode because they missed out on a lot of air pollution spreading when that debilitating death ash was floating to low orbit status.  Do you ever win, European Air Space?

These pictures of Records under a Fisher Price My First Microscope are really awesome so you should take a look!  You should also watch the video because if you’re like me, then you had no idea how vinyl records were made.  Very fun.  Everything after the jump. (more…)

The 1970s looked pretty terrible

oldlady_coalwater

Wired has a kickass series of photos entitled “The ’70s photos that made us want to save Earth” and in them are a bunch of dirty coal miners and towns that would later be basically empty and some other depressing things.  Cool though. Check it out.

South China MallChina’s good at a lot of things.  Polluting the planet, genetically breeding eternally pre-pubescent gymnasts, and questionably building massive shit in the name of economic growth.  New South China Mall is one of those questionable things!

New South China Mall is the world’s second largest mall in the world measuring 7.1 million square feet (behind another one of those freakishly irresponsible buildings in Dubai), and has the most leasable area of any mall in the world with over 1,500 available spaces for stores.  Only problem is most of those 1,500 spaces are still available.  The mall is, for the most part, completely barren.  It’s another of the many bastard children of an era built on frighteningly unshakable optimism towards real estate.

Click here for the ~14min PBS video.  Highly recommended.

The Dutch company, 360 cities, compiled this photo from 600 individual photographs taken by the Canon 5D Mark II.  The final product measures 192,000 x 96,000 pixels.
