On Sunday, Swiss voters went to the polls and 57% of those who did said yes to an amendment that would ban the building of minarets.
A minaret is a tower attached to a mosque which can have multiple balconies from which the muezzin calls fellow Muslims to prayer, but apparently the people of Switzerland felt threatened by these, stating that minarets are a show of political power and that it had nothing to do with religion. It was merely to stop the spread of Islamic fundamentalism.
So, uhh, we’ll see how that goes. I just had no idea this kind of stuff happened in SWITZERLAND?! [The Times]
